At-home STD testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea & trichomoniasis

Chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis are 3 common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) that are typically transmitted through sexual contact or from mother to infant during childbirth.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia, caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria, is one of the most prevalent STDs affecting both men and women. Chlamydia infections are effectively treated with prescribed antibiotics, but people with chlamydia often do not show any symptoms. Untreated infections increase the risk of serious complications.

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea is a common STD caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Some people do not experience any symptoms of gonorrhea, but untreated infections can lead to serious complications. Gonorrhea infections are easily diagnosed and effectively treated with prescribed antibiotics.

Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a very common STD caused by a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas vaginalis. Only 30% of people with trichomoniasis typically show any symptoms of infection

Chlamydia, gonorrhea & trichomoniasis are easy to diagnose and treat

Chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis often do not show any symptoms during the early stages of infection, and can be easily transmitted to others. If left untreated, these three STDs can lead to serious health complications. An accurate lab diagnosis for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis just requires a simple urine sample – no doctor’s appointments & no lab visits needed!

FAQ's

Urine is self-collected in the privacy of your own home. 20–30 mL of first-void urine is collected into the provided collection cup. 2 mL of this urine is then transferred to the provided urine specimen container. A small blood sample is also collected from a finger prick in the privacy of your own home. These samples are mailed to our lab using the prepaid envelope inside the kit.

Upon arrival at our lab, the urine sample is analyzed using a fully-automated molecular testing technique called a nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). These assays detect the presence of nucleic acid from chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis in the urine sample.

The blood sample is analyzed by fully automated chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassays (CMIAs) to detect the HIV p24 antigen, HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies, and syphilis antibodies.

Test results are available through our online portal as soon as testing is complete.

Avoiding vaginal, rectal or oral sex is the only definite way to prevent catching an STD through sexual contact. Other steps include correct and consistent use of male condoms, and being in a long-term monogamous relationship with a tested partner.

Some of the STDs included in this STD test can also be transmitted through contact with infected blood. Steps to reduce blood transmission include following safe injection practices, avoiding the sharing of injectable drug equipment, and avoiding unregulated tattoo and piercing establishments.

All testing is completely anonymized to ensure that your data is protected. Your samples are processed using alphanumeric codes to ensure confidentiality. Following testing, your samples are disposed of by our CAP accredited and CLIA approved laboratories.

Contact a health professional to discuss any positive results as soon as possible. Additional testing is required for confirmation for several of the STDs tested. Ensure that any recent sexual partners are aware of your diagnosis so they can also request testing.

Consistent and correct use of male latex condoms does reduce the risk of transmitting STDs. However, condoms do not eliminate the risk of STD transmission. This is especially important for syphilis if the condom does not cover the lesion.

Therefore, routine STD screening is still recommended for sexually active individuals, particularly with multiple sexual partners, even if condoms are consistently used.
